Jane Glover Conducts Sibelius and Shostakovich
Overview American violinist Stella Chen graduated from Harvard and The Juilliard School before launching an international performance career. In January, she performs Finnish composer Sibelius’ brooding Violin Concerto, which shivers with arctic beauty in its opening melodies. After intermission, Dame Jane Glover leads the FWSO in the Russian composer Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, a work originally intended to honor the Soviets’ victory over Germany in WWII that transformed into an ironically lighthearted piece by the time it premiered. <!—- BACHTALES WITH BUDDY | 1 Hour Before Concert Before each symphonic concert, FWSO Principal Keyboard Buddy Bray offers a pre-concert lecture to dive deeper into the works, their history, and other fun concert-related facts. Bachtales with Buddy is free for all ticket holders. —> Works SIBELIUS: Karelia SuiteSIBELIUS: Violin ConcertoSHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 9 Featured Artists Jane Glover, conductor Stella Chen, violin
